Bittime Discusses Leverage and Margin Risks in Crypto Futures
2026-10-22
Jakarta, October 22, 2026 — Understanding margin mechanisms is an important step before trading crypto assets through Futures instruments.
Unlike Spot transactions, Futures allows traders to take positions based on their expectations of price movements. However, it also introduces additional risks, including amplified losses from the use of leverage and the possibility of liquidation.
Bittime, a Digital Financial Asset Trader (PAKD) registered with and supervised by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), believes that understanding trading mechanisms should go hand in hand with strategy selection. Through its 3-in-1 ecosystem comprising Spot, Staking, and Futures, Bittime offers digital asset services with different risk characteristics.
Understanding Margin Before Opening a Position
In Futures trading, traders can take a long position if they expect prices to rise, or a short position if they expect prices to fall. However, trading outcomes still depend on market movements and the effectiveness of the strategy.
Even an accurate price prediction does not always guarantee a profit if costs and position mechanics are not taken into account.
Bittime Chief Operating Officer Ryan Lymn emphasized that understanding how a product works is part of the preparation required before making a transaction.
“Futures offers flexibility in taking positions on price movements, but that flexibility also comes with risks that need to be understood. Before determining a trading strategy, traders should understand how margin works, how much exposure they are taking on, and what conditions could trigger liquidation,” Ryan said.
One factor to consider is leverage. This facility allows traders to control a position with a value greater than the initial margin they use. As a result, relatively small price movements can have a greater impact on the position's equity, resulting in either gains or losses.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has also warned that using leverage in virtual asset trading can magnify the impact of price changes on trading outcomes. Therefore, traders need to consider potential losses, not just profit opportunities.
Cross and Isolated Margin Have Different Characteristics
In addition to leverage, the choice of margin type also affects position management. Under Cross Margin, available margin balances can be shared to support related positions. This mechanism can give positions access to available balances, but it can also expose a larger portion of the account balance to risk.
Meanwhile, Isolated Margin allocates margin separately to a specific position. With this approach, the margin allocated to that position is separated from other balances according to the platform's mechanism. However, losses on the position can still occur until the allocated margin is depleted, depending on market conditions and liquidation rules.
Neither margin type is automatically suitable for every trader. The choice should take into account the trading strategy, position size, risk tolerance, and understanding of the applicable trading terms.
Ryan added that risk management should be planned before opening a position, rather than only after the market moves against expectations.
“Traders need to set an acceptable loss limit, understand margin requirements, and prepare an exit plan. Using higher leverage does not mean a strategy is better. The most important thing is to ensure that position sizes and potential losses remain within each trader's financial capacity and risk tolerance,” Ryan said.
Derivatives Activity Reflects Market Dynamics
Derivatives trading remains an important part of global digital asset market activity. CoinGlass reported that crypto derivatives trading volume reached approximately US$85.7 trillion throughout 2025. In the first half of 2026, volume was recorded at US$35.08 trillion, down 15.7% compared with the same period a year earlier.
In Indonesia, OJK data for August 2026 showed that digital financial asset derivatives transaction value reached Rp4.56 trillion, an increase of 33.76% from Rp3.41 trillion in July 2026.
Changes in transaction volume reflect market activity, but they should not be used as the sole basis for determining price direction or making trading decisions. Liquidity conditions, volatility, market sentiment, and the characteristics of the instrument should also be considered.
Bittime Futures Features and the Importance of Measured Use
Bittime Futures offers 49 trading pairs, the option to take long and short positions, leverage of up to 25x, and Cross Margin and Isolated Margin options. These features offer flexibility in developing trading strategies, but users need to understand the function and implications of each mechanism before using it.
As part of its 3-in-1 ecosystem, Bittime also offers Spot and Staking services. These three services operate differently and have distinct risk profiles, so users should make choices based on their goals and understanding of each product.
“Our goal is to provide a range of digital asset services while helping users understand the characteristics of each product. For Futures in particular, users need to pay attention to leverage, margin, volatility, and liquidation risks. Disciplined decisions and an understanding of risk are important parts of responsible trading,” Ryan concluded.
Ultimately, trading Futures requires more than simply predicting price direction. Understanding position mechanics, measuring exposure, and setting risk limits can help traders make more deliberate decisions, although these measures cannot eliminate the possibility of losses.
