Nigeria Plans to Establish AI and Blockchain Research Center

Bittime - Nigeria announced plans to establish a research center focused on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain. The initiative will be implemented in 6 geopolitical zones across the country, with the aim of driving innovation in critical areas such as drones, additive manufacturing, AI and robotics.

Established a Research Center of Nigeria  

This announcement was made by the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, at the West African Internet of Things conference in Lagos. In his remarks, Inuwa emphasized commitment to developing a strong technology research ecosystem in Nigeria. 

These research centers are expected to be the main driver of innovation in various fields, including blockchain technology which is increasingly popular in the world. With this research center, Nigeria hopes to attract more investor attention and strengthen its position as a leading technology hub in Africa.

Support for Startups in Nigeria

Apart from establishing a research center, NITDA also plans to support Nigerian startups in developing the latest technology products. NITDA will create an innovation sandbox to help startups develop use cases, build businesses, and bring their products to market. This move is expected to strengthen the startup ecosystem in Nigeria and encourage economic growth through technological innovation.

The initiative will also be supported by the “Three Million Technical Talents” (3MTT) program which aims to train 3 million Nigerians by 2027. The program aims to increase the number of developers in Nigeria and ensure that the country has sufficient human resources to support growth of the technology sector.

Nigeria as Africa's Silicon Valley

Nigeria's potential to become the "Silicon Valley of Africa" ​​is not only recognized by the government, but also by industry leaders. Shitij Taneja, Managing Director of Vertex Next, organizer of the IoT West Africa conference, highlighted Nigeria's huge potential with its large young population and dynamic startup ecosystem.  

Nigeria also recently launched its first multilingual large language model as part of a push to lead in AI development in Africa. This move shows Nigeria's commitment to not only keep pace with global technological developments, but also to be a leader in technological innovation on the continent.

Not only focusing on domestic development, Nigeria is also opening the door to international cooperation. Recently, Nigeria and the United States announced intentions to discuss the digital economy, emerging technologies and AI.
