BitcoinOS Successfully Claims First Zero-Knowledge Proof Verification on Bitcoin Mainnet

Developers at BitcoinOS claim that they successfully verified zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) on Bitcoin mainnet for the first time in history. This verification was carried out through a series of on-chain transactions on Tuesday, with final verification occurring at Bitcoin block 853626.

The BitcoinOS team will present this achievement in front of a live audience at Bitcoin 2024 in Nashville on Thursday to prove that this first blockchain is already capable of doing things previously thought impossible. "This achievement unlocks the potential for unlimited scaling and functionality in Bitcoin without requiring additional changes to the Bitcoin base layer," said a representative from BitcoinOS.

BitcoinOS Superlayer and Rollup Technology

BitcoinOS is a project that aims to build a trustless “superlayer” of interoperable rollups on Bitcoin. Rollup is a layer-2 blockchain that allows faster, cheaper, and more programmable transactions that are then “rolled up” and settled on the more secure layer-1. To function, rollups require ZKP, a cryptographic method for proving that off-chain information is correct without disclosing the information itself.

Limitations of Previous Scaling Solutions

While rollup and ZKP technologies have become core technologies for scaling the Ethereum network, they are often overlooked in discussions of Bitcoin scaling due to perceived technical constraints. Bitcoin developers have previously pursued suboptimal scaling solutions like sidechains, which require users to trust centralized and federated companies to not steal their BTC. Meanwhile, the better-known Lightning Network requires no such trust, but BitcoinOS revealed that other limitations have seen it trend back towards centralization in practice and less widespread adoption.

Edan Yago, a BitcoinOS core contributor, stated that the Lightning Network is a vastly overrated scaling solution. "As a technology, because it is pre-funded and because you need to switch between multiple players, it is only suitable for a small number of niche applications," Yago told Decrypt.

The Future of BitcoinOS and Rollup Technology

With the release of its whitepaper in April, BitcoinOS claimed that its rollup system would make sidechains and other layer-2 solutions “completely obsolete” by allowing users to bridge their BTC back and forth between rollups in a nearly trustless manner. In its live presentation, BitcoinOS demonstrated that ZKP can be used to create covenants—conditional payments that cannot be executed unless proper proof is provided. This is the key to building a decentralized Bitcoin bridge, a “holy grail” scaling solution that was previously thought to require a soft fork of Bitcoin's code to make it happen.
